words. are important and interesting.

a thought ramble with words and songs…from santa claus to oscar grant to the ship sailing in on a drunken wave.

my son asked me the other day about santa claus.
he is nine.
he told me some kids at school were saying that their parent’s were santa claus.
when i asked him what he thought, he said that i was not santa claus…
but, we left out talking about weather santa was real or not….because that doesn’t matter too much does it…
belief is belief is belief is love.

well most of the time.
sometimes real things matter.
like doing justice.
like talking about how race matters.
just believing in justice and equality doesn’t help.
it didn’t help oscar grant.
two years for mesherle.
and it is not the lack of time he will spend in jail. the whole system of justice in this country is broken. it is an injustice system. where who you are is more important that what you have done….

the video of oscar grant’s death…it is worth watching again. to remember.

to remember that we have an injustice system that acts in our name.
an unarmed black man was shot by a white man granted by the state (in your name and mine) the power to carry a gun and use it. and he did. put a bullet in oscar grant’s back. and johannes mehserle, the BART police man, who did the shooting was sentenced to two years in jail. the stakes for the misuse of power are not high enough. if the situation was reversed a black cop shooting a white man, or even a white man shooting a white man or black man shooting a black man…the justice metted out by the state would be different. statistics show it different races different sentences (years ago when i worked for the south carolina coalition to abolish the death penalty i saw that first hand in the stats i compiled.) oscar grant’s life was worth more than that. our safety as citizens is worth more than that. and really so too is johannes mehserle’s life. we are products of a system of unequal justice and opportunity and unless we educate our own selves to see that, unless we listen to the words and see other people with our own eyes and ears we are responsible for keeping the possibility of more of same going on.

listen.

my aunt harriet sent these words.
i like them.
interesting.

Did you know that, the words “race car” spelled backwards still spells “race car”?

That the Hebrew word for “give” is “natan” which, spelled backward or forward is the same and has got to have some significance about giving and taking.

And that “eat” is the only word that, if you take the first letter and move it to the last, spells its own past tense, “ate”?

And if you rearrange the letters in “Tea Party Republicans,” and add just a few more letters, it spells: “Shut the fuck up you free-loading, progress-blocking, benefit-grabbing, resource-sucking, violent hypocrites, and deal with the fact that you nearly wrecked the country under Bush and that our president is black, so try and get over it.”

Isn’t that interesting?

the ship will one day come in.

love.
